Oscar nominations announced - ‘Benjamin Button’

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” dominated the nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards on Thursday morning, picking up 13 nominations including one for best picture. Slumdog Millionaire, from Britain’s Danny Boyle, was close behind with 10 nominations, including best film.
Other best pic contenders are Universal’s “Frost/Nixon,” Focus Features’ “Milk,” the Weinstein Co.’s “The Reader.”
Nominations for the 81st Oscars, were announced Thursday morning at Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences h.q. in BevHills by Acad prexy Sid Ganis and Forest Whitaker.
The Dark Knight and Milk received eight nominations, with the late Heath Ledger receiving a best supporting actor nod, one year to the day after his death.
There were a few surprises in who was left out. Clint Eastwood was not nominated for Best Actor and his “Gran Torino” was shut out of all major categories. Christopher Nolan got no love for his direction of “The Dark Knight.” That Kate Winslet was nominated as best actress was not a surprise, but some gasps filled the Samuel Goldwyn Theater here when it came for her role as a German woman with a dark secret in “The Reader” and not for her turn as an unhappy housewife in “Revolutionary Road.”
With the Screen Actors Guild, at war with studios over a new employment contract, the Oscars may be used as a high-profile platform to push its cause, possibly disrupting the telecast with pickets.
What the ceremony itself will look like is also unclear, with producers promising to inject more frivolity into the proceedings to combat sinking television ratings, but so far keeping details to themselves. Hugh Jackman will host the ceremony, set for broadcast by ABC on Feb. 22.
Ratings for last year’s Oscars plunged to a record low with about 32 million viewers watching.
